Laptop without a credit check: what that really means in Nigeria
Most students have no credit file to check. What device lenders in Nigeria ask for instead, who pulls a bureau report, and how to read a no-credit-check offer.
Search for a laptop on instalments and you will see the phrase everywhere: no credit check. It sounds like a door opening. For a student with no payslip and no loan history, it often is.
But it is worth knowing what is behind the phrase. No lender hands a laptop to a stranger with no questions asked. Something is always checked. The real question is what, and whether the thing being checked is fair to a student.
This article explains what a credit check is in Nigeria, why most students would fail one for the wrong reason, what the main device lenders ask for instead, and how to read a no-credit-check offer without getting burned.
What a credit check is in Nigeria
Nigeria has three credit bureaus licensed by the Central Bank of Nigeria under the Credit Reporting Act 2017: CRC Credit Bureau, CreditRegistry and FirstCentral Credit Bureau (Jaiyeola, 2025). A credit check is a lender pulling your file from one of them. Banks have been directed to obtain reports "from, at least, 2 credit bureaus before granting any facility" since 2010 (Komolafe, 2010).
The problem is coverage. By one industry estimate, only about 13% of the population has a credit bureau file (Abubakar, 2025). EFInA's 2026 survey found that 10% of adults, about 11.9 million people, use formal credit at all (Addeh, 2026). For most students, a credit check is a search of an empty file.
An empty file is not a bad file. But a lender that relies on the bureau has nothing to go on, so it either says no or asks for something else: a salary, a guarantor, a bank statement. That something else is what "no credit check" usually replaces. The phrase tells you what a lender will not look at. It does not tell you what it will.
What device lenders in Nigeria actually ask for
We read the published terms of the best-known device financing names on 19 October 2026. Only what their own pages say is recorded here. Where a page says nothing, the cell says not published. We do not state anyone's interest or fees.
| Provider | Deposit | Plan length | What they say they check |
|---|---|---|---|
| CDcare | Not published | 4 to 40 weeks or 2 to 12 months, item delivered at the midpoint | Phone number, NIN or BVN, a face photo, address, a debit card and bank account for direct debit. Defaulted accounts may be reported to credit agencies. |
| SLOT | Not published | 3 or 6 months | A deposit and a quick verification. "Eligibility and approval will be determined by our financing partner." |
| Credit Direct Checkout | 30% to 80% | 1 to 6 months, limits up to ₦1,000,000 | With consent: BVN, phone number, credit report and bank statement. |
| Easybuy (Play Store listing) | From 30% | 3 to 12 months | "No paperwork, no collateral." Phones only. Documents not published. |
| Pody | From 20% | 1, 3, 6 or 9 months, up to 270 days | Government ID, liveness, address, student status and academic standing. No payslip, no guarantor, no credit history required. |

Two things stand out. First, "no paperwork" is not "no check". Every provider verifies identity, and most take a card or a bank mandate for repayments. Second, at least one, Credit Direct, says plainly that it pulls a credit report. That is not a criticism. It is the thing to know before you apply with an empty file.
How to read a no-credit-check offer
- 1Ask what replaces the check. If the answer is a salary or a guarantor, the offer was not written for students. If it is your enrolment and your academic record, it was.
- 2Ask whether they report. A lender that pulls no report may also file none. That protects you from nothing and builds you nothing. The useful combination is no history required to start, and your repayments reported once you do.
- 3Do the sum. The deposit plus every instalment should equal the price plus any stated interest and fees. If the total is not on the screen, ask for it in writing before you agree.
- 4Check the app's permissions. Lenders are prohibited from accessing contacts, call logs and photos under the FCCPC's 2025 rules, which carry fines of up to ₦100 million for companies (Nwokoma, 2025). An app that still asks is not one to trust with a bank mandate.
- 5Check the register. The FCCPC lists approved, conditionally approved, watchlisted and delisted lenders. When we checked in October 2026 it listed 525 approved companies and 112 apps on its watchlist (FCCPC, 2026; Akintaro, 2026).
What the laptop costs, before any plan
The spec most courses need is 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. In the guides that price machines in naira, that class runs from about ₦320,000 for an Asus Vivobook 15 to ₦490,000 for an Acer Aspire or a Dell Inspiron 15 (Techeconomy, 2025), and prices rose in 2026 "alongside pressure in the global memory and storage hardware market" (Ebenezer, 2026). For students, the sensible range is ₦250,000 to ₦400,000 (Emmanuel, 2026).
Here is what those prices look like split on Pody's terms, with 20% today and the rest over nine months at 0% interest. The figures are examples, not a catalogue.
| Laptop price | 20% today | Left to pay | Per month over 9 months |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₦300,000 | ₦60,000 | ₦240,000 | About ₦26,700 |
| ₦400,000 | ₦80,000 | ₦320,000 | About ₦35,600 |
| ₦500,000 | ₦100,000 | ₦400,000 | About ₦44,400 |
The total in every row is the price. That is what 0% interest and no markup mean in practice. Try other prices and plan lengths in the laptop financing calculator.
How Pody approaches it
Pody does not require a credit history. A blank file does not disqualify you, because we never expected a student to have one. Here is what we do instead.
- What we check. For KYC: a government-issued ID, a short liveness check and address verification. For student verification: your institution, course, matriculation number, institutional email and a photo of your student ID. It usually takes one business day. What verification involves.
- What we don't ask for. A payslip, proof of income, or a guarantor.
- What we look at instead. Your enrolment, your academic standing and your repayment record with us. They feed a Pody Credit Score from 0 to 1000, which sets your limit of up to ₦1,000,000. See how the credit model works.
- The terms. From 20% today, the rest over 1, 3, 6 or 9 months, up to 270 days, paid daily, weekly or monthly. 0% interest, no hidden fees, no markup. A late payment fee may apply if you miss a date.
- Reporting both ways. Repayments, positive and negative, are reported to licensed Nigerian credit bureaus under the Credit Reporting Act 2017. No history to start, a history when you finish.
"No credit check" is a promise about what a lender will not look at. The better question is what it will. For a student, the right answer is your studies and your record, not someone else's payslip.
